Like so many other games, Gears of War 4 will offer microtransactions for multiplayer. Now, developer The Coalition has published a blog post explaining how these work and more.

Gears of War 4's online mode offers what The Coalition calls cards. These represent all manner of things, including equipment and abilities for Horde mode, as well as player customization options. Another card type is called a Bounty, and it challenges you to complete an objective to earn a reward.

The Coalition notes that, because it cares "deeply about preserving competitive balance," no cards will offer any gameplay benefits.

Cards range in rarity from Common to Legendary. Some of the card types include (descriptions written by The Coalition):

Characters – A character to use in Horde or Versus. These include new characters to play as on the battlefield and special customized versions of the characters in Gears of War 4.Weapon Skins – Stand out from the crowd by customizing your weapons. Each weapon skin card unlocks a skin for a particular weapon. In a first for the Gears of War franchise, you can now customize power weapons to change their look when acquired from a spawn point on the battlefield.Emblems – Customize your player identity in Gears of War 4. Emblems show behind your username in lobbies and scoreboards.Bounties – Versus and Horde Bounties provide challenges, such as getting seven kills in a single match of Team Deathmatch, and provide XP or credit rewards upon completion. Bounties are only consumed once successfully completed, so you can attempt them as many times as you need until you conquer their challenge.Horde Equipment and Abilities – We will reveal more on equipment and abilities when we talk about Horde in detail in the coming months. Stay tuned.

The primary way you will acquire cards in Gears of War 4 is through Gear Packs. These come with a certain number of cards, and The Coalition notes that they are usually randomized. You can buy them with credits that are unlocked through normal gameplay (in Versus and Horde modes alike). Alternatively, you can buy them with real money, though pricing has not yet been announced. Another thing to note that is that as you rise through the ranks of multiplayer, you will earn allotments of Gear Packs.

Since Gear Packs are randomized, there is no guarantee you'll get what you want. Thankfully, you will be able to get rid of "almost" any card to earn a "scrap." This is a second form of currency that is only acquired through destroying cards; the amount of scrap earned depends on the rarity of the item. Players can also build new cards using scraps, and the cost to create a card also depends on the rarity of the items it contains.

More details on Gears of War 4's Gear Packs will be announced in the run up to launch. If all of this sounds familiar, it's because Halo 5's Req system does something similar.

Lastly, The Coalition announced that people who stop by the Xbox booth at San Diego Comic-Con next week and play Gears of War 4 will go home with a physical Gear Pack, containing actual cards. These unlock eight customization items and bounties for the game, redeemable when it launches in October.

The Coalition will also give away physical Gears of War cards as part of a Twitter promotion that will run next weekend. Additionally, preordering the game at GameStop gets you a physical Gear Pack that comes with the Vintage Reyna character for multiplayer.

The Gears of War 4 release date is set for October 11. The game is an Xbox Play Anywhere title, meaning you can buy it (digitally) on Xbox One and get the PC version free or vice versa.

In other news about Gears of War 4, Microsoft has announced a 2 TB Xbox One S themed around the game, as well as a JD Fenix controller.
